Source Water Protection from Infectious Cryptosporidium spp. Oocysts Cryptosporidium spp., a waterborne and foodborne protozoan parasite, can cause acute gastrointestinal disease that can be prolonged and life-threatening for individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems. The goal of this work is to identify the sources, species, and infectivity of Cryptosporidium oocysts in drinking water supplies for Philadelphia and/or the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Methods to be used include monthly collection of samples from surface water, point source discharges, and potential animal hosts combined with phylogenetic analysis of oocysts. Results should lead to improved watershed management practices to prevent public exposure to this parasite. The research is being conducted by Dr. Kristen L. Jellison, P.C. Rossin Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lehigh University. |
